Among them is ARNO member Lt Cdr George Spencer, one of Northern Ireland’s last surviving D-Day and Second World War veterans. George saw extensive service in the Mediterranean, home waters and the Pacific, embarking on what would become a distinguished Royal Navy career spanning four decades.
Recently celebrating his 100th birthday, George was honoured at Gracehill, County Antrim, where he opened the Castle Walk at the UNESCO World Heritage Site surrounded by family, friends, local dignitaries and Royal Navy personnel.
Reflecting on his service, George said: “The Royal Navy means a lot to me. I have fond memories of my long naval career, and I am proud of my service.”
As we mark D-Day, we pay tribute to George and all those who served with courage and dedication during the Second World War. Their legacy continues to inspire future generations.
